Description
Artwork "Untitled" George Baselitz
Wednesdays 10am-noon
8 week session
I am wary of definitive rules when it comes to art making. As an art teacher, I'm careful to share compositional and creative rules as possibilities, not necessities. In art school, I experienced how detrimental certain rules can be to creativity when presented as definitive facts.
Many artists take a standard rule and turn it on it's head. Quite literally, German artist Georg Baselitz began painting his subjects upside down in 1969 to strip away narrative content and emotional drama. Baselitz inverted figures, portraits, trees and rural settings to force viewers to look at color, brushwork, and formal structure rather than storytelling. By flipping the orientation, he destabilized traditional perspective, turning recognizable scenes into a tension between abstraction and figuration.
We'll explore how artists throughout history, have taken standard art knowledge and gone in the opposite direction to create something new and extraordinary. Students will have the opportunity to counter the norms and play in this fun creative space.
This unique format for drawing and painting students is designed to enhance and expand both your creative and technical skills. You will be given a specific prompt each week and experience artistic growth through discussion of your work and fellow student's work as well as a weekly presentation of past and contemporary artists.
Students connect to class through Zoom. A link is sent via email each week.
